Thoas Fioretos, research group leader and professor of clinical genetics at Lund University, was recently elected as chair of the Class for medical sciences of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

What does the role entail?

"The chairmanship involves leading the work of the Medical Class and contributing to the Academy's mission of promoting science. It involves bringing together leading researchers, initiating scientific discussions, and representing medical research in the Academy's work and in dialogue with society."

This is a role that few researchers from Lund have held. What did you think when you were asked?

"I felt deeply honored. Election to the Academy and the trust to lead the work of the class are ultimately based on successful research and represent not only recognition of the medical research that I conduct, but also of the strong research environment at Lund University."

What issues do you want to raise during your time as chair?

"My main goal is scientific excellence and long-term vision. Groundbreaking medical advances require in-depth, curiosity-driven research and appropriate funding. With my medical background, I also want to work to strengthen both basic and clinical research so that the results benefit patients and society at large."

How can the Medical Class strengthen medical research and its impact on society?

"By strengthening the Academy's role as an independent and knowledge-based voice, highlighting the importance of excellent medical research and contributing to the Academy's work with scientifically grounded perspectives for decision-makers in a time of major societal challenges."

You have many assignments in addition to your research. How do you manage to do everything?

"By surrounding myself with wise and dedicated colleagues, and by having the support of an understanding family."
