Excellence Seminar Series at Lund University Faculty of Medicine

The purpose of Excellence Seminar Series is to provide a link between researchers across the Faculty of Medicine, to and between other relevant.

Faculties and researchers in the region, to provide a meeting place and a forum for the researchers to gather around.

The seminar is open to students and staff at Lund University and Region Skåne as well as other interested in excellent research.

Excellence seminar with Siamon Gordon 1/6, 2017

On June 1st 2017, the eleventh seminar within the Excellence Seminar Series

Siamon Gordon, an outstanding scientist and noted for his work on the phenotypic and functional diversity of macrophages. He began his studies on macrophages while in the laboratory of Zanvil Cohn at Rockefeller University in 1966. After moving to the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology at University of Oxford in 1976 he continued this work and identified the pan-macrophage marker F4/80 and scavenger receptors. He also discovered the pattern recognition receptor, Dectin-1 that recognizes fungal pathogens.

Prof. Siamon Gordon will hold an open seminar on the title:
"The Versatile Macrophage: Tissue Heterogeneity and Function."

On May 20th 2015, The Faculty of Medicine gives the tenth seminar within the Excellence Seminar Series and we are honoured to present Nobel Prize Laureate Harald zur Hausen

Prof., Dr. Harlad zur Hausen, German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), was awarded the The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2008 for his discovery of human papilloma viruses causing cervical cancer.

Prof. Dr. Harald zur Hausen gave an open seminar on the title: “Dairy cattle serum and milk factors as risks for colon and breast cancers and for a neurological disease”

Excellence Seminar Nobel Prize Laureate Peter C. Agre

On October 9th 2014 -  the ninth seminar within the Excellence Seminar Series at Lund University Faculty of Medicine:

Peter C. Agre, professor, and molecular biologist who was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (which he shared with Roderick MacKinnon) for his discovery of the long-sought "channels" - aquaporins - that regulate and facilitate water molecule transport through cell membranes, a process essential to all living organisms.

Professor Agre gave an open seminar on the title:
“Aquaporin Water Channels: from Atomic Structure to Malaria”.

He is the founder and former Director of the Institute for Genetics and Cellular and Molecular Biology, IGBMC, and the founder and former Director of the Institut Clinique de la Souris, ICS/MCI,  in Strasbourg, France.

Professor Martin Chalfie gave an open seminar on the title:
"GFP: Lighting Up Life"

Martin Chalfie is scientist within the field of neurobiology and Professor of biological sciences at Columbia University, USA. Together with Osamu Shimomura and Roger Y. Tsien, Professor Chalfie recieved the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The prize was awarded for the discovery and development of the green flourescent protein GFP.

Professor Mario Capecci gave an open seminar on the title:
"Gene Targeting into the 21st Century: Mouse Models of Human Disease from Cancer to Neuropsychiatric Disorders."

Mario Capecchi is an molecular geneticist and winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, together with Martin Evans and Oliver Smithies, for discovering a method to create mice in which a specific gene is turned off, known as knockout mice.

Excellence Seminar with Nobel Prize Laureate Aaron Ciechanover

On September 8th 2011 - The third seminar within the Excellence Seminar Series at Lund University Faculty of Medicine:

Professor Aaron Ciechanover gave an open seminar on the title:
“Why Our Proteins Have to Die so We Shall Live: The ubiquitin system for intracellular proteolysis - From Basic Mechanisms through Human Diseases and onto Drug Development”

Aaron Ciechanover received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004 along with Avram Hershko and Irwin Rose. The price was awarded for the discovery they made at the beginning of the 1980s: one of the cell's most important cyclical processes, regulated protein degradation.

Aaron Ciechanover was born in 1947 in Haifa, Israel. He received his doctorate in medicine in 1975 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and in biology in 1982 at the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology), Haifa. He is now a Distinguished Professor at the Center for Cancer and Vascular Biology, the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine and Research Institute, Technion, Haifa, Israel. Ciechanover is also a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and Institute of Medicine (IOM).

Excellence Seminar with Nobel Prize Laureate Andrew Fire

On March 30, 2011 - The second seminar within the Excellence Seminar Series at Lund University Faculty of Medicine:

Professor Andrew Fire gave an open seminar on the title:
“The Molecular ´enemies ´ list: exploring the diverse molecular repertories we use in protecting ourselves from unwanted information”.

Andrew Fire, professor of pathology and genetics at Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA, USA. Together with Craig C. Mello, Professor Fire received the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The price was awarded for the discovery of the process that can degrade mRNA in a given gene.

It is of great importance for the regulation of gene expression, participates in defense against viral infections, and keeps jumping genes under control. RNA interference is being widely used in basic science as a method to study the function of genes.

Gerhart Wagner, professor in prokaryotic microbiology at Uppsala RNA Research Centre – URRC, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Uppsala University and has his research interest in “Regulatory RNAs in bacteria and elsewhere”.
