Surgery course for exchange students

Type of course: International course at the undergraduate level

Teaching language: English

Grade: The grading scale of this course: Pass (G), Fail (U)

Study period: Autumn semester (Sep-Nov). Please note that the student must arrive one week before the placement to repeat the MRSA test.

The course is held in both Malmö and Lund!

Learning outcomes: After completion of the course the student should be able to identify patients with conditions/problems related to certain defined clinical situations. For each of these specified clinical situations the student should be able to describe and explain:

  • Patient care
  • How to examine the situation
  • Important differential diagnoses
  • Prevention and therapy
  • Pathophysiological mechanisms

The course is based on case discussions, seminars and overview lectures. The students are assigned to different clinical sections. They will participate under guidance in OR, ER, endoscopy and out-patient clinic. The students are instructed to establish and complete a portfolio as part of the examination.

Type of course: International course at the undergraduate level

Teaching language: English

Study period: Autumn semester (Nov-Jan)

Prerequisites: To be admitted to the course, the student must have passed the international course in surgery at Lund University (VMFM02), 18 credits. The course is a specialised continuation of the international course in surgery in which students gain practice in taking a position on a current issue in surgery and evaluating  scientific papers in surgery related to it.

Learning outcomes: On completion of the course, students shall be able to:

  • analyse scientific results and assess and critically evaluate their significance and limitations
  • independently write a paper in the form of a research article write a popular science summary
  • orally present and discuss their results in a seminar and critically review the work of fellow students

The general objective of the course is to enable students to increase their ability to evaluate research in surgery.
