Health Declaration for Clinical Placements

To ensure both patient safety and the student’s own health during clinical placements in Sweden, the following vaccinations, screenings, and health criteria apply.

Prior to arrival

The student will receive a Health Declaration Form, which must be completed by a physician or other healthcare professional and submitted at least two weeks before arrival. Note that the Health Declaration needs to be completed no later than 30 days prior to arrival.

The Health Declaration form includes:

1. Measles and Hepatitis B

For their own protection during clinical training, students are recommended to have received the following vaccinations:

  • Measles (MMR): Two doses
  • Hepatitis B: Three doses

2. MRSA Screening

A pre-arrival MRSA test (including samples from nasal, throat, perineum, and any piercings or skin lesions) is optional but recommended.

Exemptions: Students from the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Åland, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland) are exempt from MRSA screening.

3. Skin Integrity

The student must have intact skin over the entire body — no open wounds, eczema, or skin lesions.
If the student’s skin is intact, it is allowed to begin the clinical placement while awaiting the MRSA test result.

4. Tuberculosis (TB) Screening

The student must not show any signs of active TB, such as:

  • Persistent cough for more than three weeks
  • Fever
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Night sweats

Latent TB testing is only required for students coming from countries classified as risk areas (red or yellow on this map, provided by the Public Health Agency of Sweden), and only if the clinical placement exceeds three months.

Accepted test results:

  • PPD test: <10 mm
  • Quantiferon test: Negative (recommended if the student has previously received the BCG vaccine)

If the student receives a positive Quantiferon test or PPD >10 mm, a chest X-ray follow-up is required.

Upon arrival in Lund

In accordance with Swedish healthcare regulations, all incoming students (except those from Nordic countries) are required to undergo MRSA screening upon arrival in Lund.

The screening is organized by the International Office and is free of charge. It includes bacterial cultures taken from the nasal mucosa, throat, perineum, and any piercings, wounds, or skin lesions. Please note that the screening is not valid if you are taking antibiotics at the time of testing.

An appointment for the screening will be pre-booked for you before your arrival.
