Organisation and management

How we are structured

The Faculty of Medicine is an organisational unit within Lund University. The faculty has ultimate responsibility for research and education in medicine, nursing and health sciences at Lund University.

Where to find us

The Faculty of Medicine has operations in both Lund and Malmö. Much of our education and research take place at the Skåne University Hospital and other parts of the health care system in Region Skåne, as well as at our three faculty’s buildings.

The houses are managed by the Med-service Board. The Med-service unit is responsible for maintanence and service.

Faculty Board

The Faculty Board is the faculty’s highest decision-making body. The board has overall responsibility for education, research, innovation, and interaction with business and society at the Faculty of Medicine. The Faculty Board comprises representatives of academic staff, students and other staff, as well as external members.

Faculty Management

The Dean represents the faculty within and outside the University. The Dean has a deputy who is known as the Deputy Dean. The Dean is the chair of the Faculty Board and the Deputy Dean is the vice-chair. The Dean and Deputy Dean are elected by the faculty. The Dean appoints the other members of the faculty management. The management includes Vice Deans with specific areas of responsibility.

Other boards, committees and working groups

Some of the faculty’s areas of responsibility are dealt with in subject-specific committees which work on matters delegated from the Faculty Board. These are the Readership Appointments Committee, three health, safety and environment committees and the Gender Equality and Equal Opportunities Committee. The board for research and infrastructure’s task is to ensure that financial and infrastructural resources for research are utilised effectively.

The role of the Academic Appointments Board is to process, announce and propose selections for appointments in all academic staff categories apart from lecturers and postdoctoral research fellows, and its work is regulated by a University Board decision.

The Dean sometimes appoints inquiries and working groups to draw up proposals on specific issues.

The Faculty of Medicine at Lund University is made up of six departments in Lund and Malmö, at which the faculty’s research, research studies, and commissioned education take place. In order to bring together research groups with similar specialisations, some departments have formed divisions with two or more groups. Staff involved in education at undergraduate and Master’s level are generally employed at departments, but the faculty’s three programme boards are in charge of all undergraduate and Master’s education. The highest decision-making body in each department is the department board, which is chaired by the head of department. The head of department represents the department within and outside the University. The head of department appoints one assistant head of department to coordinate undergraduate and Master’s education, and one assistant head of department to coordinate research studies. Additional assistant heads of department may be appointed.


Research environments, centres and networks

Research groups may collaborate as a network or centre in order to tackle greater challenges. Many centres collaborate on cross-disciplinary or faculty-wide issues. The faculty has a number of strong research environments and centres made up of several research groups that have received external funding against national or international competition.


The faculty’s undergraduate education board has a financial and strategic responsibility for the faculty’s undergraduate programmes.

The programme boards are, by delegation from the undergraduate education board, in charge of development, planning and management of courses and programs. All teaching staff are employed at a department but teach in degree programmes on behalf of the programme boards.

The Research Studies Board is responsible for the faculty’s third-cycle, or research, programmes.


The Faculty Office, under the leadership of the Head of the Faculty Office, is responsible for preparing matters for the Faculty Board and the faculty management and ensuring that decisions are implemented. The Faculty Office also provides service, information and advice to departments, programme boards and other units within the faculty. Each department has a departmental office. These are headed by an office manager who after the head of department is in charge of the department’s operations, finances and human resources.


The Faculty of Medicine Centre for Teaching and Learning, MedCUL, is a unit that coordinates quality enhancement within the faculty’s education activities, and is also responsible for the faculty’s training in teaching and learning in higher education. Library & ICT at the Faculty of Medicine provide service in three areas: teaching and learning, research and publication, and information provision. IT service is integrated into the library organisation. The Centre for Comparative Medicine is responsible for serving the faculty’s research operations with in vivo models.

Research infrastructures

The Bioimaging Centre, LBIC, is responsible for providing the University’s research operations with an infrastructure platform for imaging technology for use on humans and in animal experiments. LBIC is one example of the excellent infrastructures at the faculty.
