Summer scholarships 2024
Information regarding summer scholarships 2024 will be published on this web page during the autumn 2023.
Summer scholarships 2023
The Research Studies Board announces partially funded two-month summer scholarships for students at the Faculty of Medicine’s undergraduate and advanced programs.
The two-month scholarship (with payment in June and July) must be used for an eight-week summer research project within any of the courses VMFX70, VMFX71 or VMFX72 during the period June-August 2023. Note that this is a two-step process and that the applicant does not need to have a supervisor or project in place at the time of the scholarship application (see information about the two steps below).
There are three summer research project courses that result in 15 credits each. The courses start with an introductory day on June 13th 2023, and the results are presented in the form of a brief written abstract/report and an oral presentation for other scholarship holders and the Executive Committee on August 24th.
The total scholarship amount is SEK 24,000 (SEK 12,000 per month, non-taxable). The scholarships are awarded to students at all stages of their education in accordance with the criteria stated for each individual course. Students cannot be awarded more than three summer scholarships each during their time of their educational programme. Please note that students who are non-EU / EEA citizens have to pay tuition fees.
General information regarding finding a project for VMFX70-72 Summer Research Project courses and VMFX75 Preparatory Research School
Before the research project can be started, the student must contact a research group at the Faculty of Medicine where the project can be performed. The supervisor must hold at least a PhD. The student then writes a project plan according to the template found at the Canvas page and submit this through the submission page at the course page on Canvas. The planning committee will assess the project plan.
Step 1: Application for the scholarship (deadline 2023-01-29)
The application for the scholarships is found online. Deadline to apply is 2023-01-29.
Application form - the Faculty of Medicine Summer Research Scholarship (new window)
When you submit the application it will be sent to the following address sommarstipendier [at] med [dot] lu [dot] se (sommarstipendier[at]med[dot]lu[dot]se). Please complete your application by sending a results transcript from LADOK to the e-mail address above (same deadline). The applicant does not need to have a supervisor at the time of the scholarship application.
Step 2: Application for one of the summer courses VMFX70, VMFX71 or VMFX72 (deadline 2023-04-23)
The application for one of the summer courses is made by submitting a project plan. Please note that all student must, on their own, find a project and a supervisor.
The supervisor will have to co-fund the scholarship as the scholarship will not be fully funded by the faculty. When the student and the supervisor have agreed on a suitable project, the student writes a project plan with support from the supervisor. The project plan should be submitted for approval no later than 2023-04-23. The summer project can be part of a long-term project, but should be designed such that the student can achieve some results within the two-month project period.
The Research Studies Board cannot finance all applicants, and the students will receive notification of scholarship approval or not (decision will be sent by e-mail 2023-02-17). If your application for scholarship is not approved, you may still be admitted and registered to the summer research project course if you can find a supervisor who is willing to provide the full (100 percent) scholarship and submit your project plan on time in April. The establishment of such a scholarship is easier if the applicant has applied for a scholarship within this call, therefore, we highly encourage students to apply if you consider doing a project during the summer 2023.

Advice when writing a motivational statement for summer scholarship application
General:
- Be concise, the reviewers read many applications. A precise and brief statement is preferred
- Research merits are important. You apply in competition with other students, all merits related to research as well as extra curriculum courses are important. Activities that have no impact on your future research career are less important.
- Try to briefly motivate why you should be given a scholarship. This is extra important if you at the time of application have no research experience.
Preparatory Research School 2023
Are you a master student or in later parts of your educational programme? Have you previously performed a summer scholarship? Are you interested in learning more about medical and health research?
Take the opportunity to apply for the Preparatory Research School at the Faculty of Medicine. Deadline: 2022-12-11.

When you submit the application it will be sent to the following address sommarstipendier [at] med [dot] lu [dot] se (sommarstipendier[at]med[dot]lu[dot]se). Please complete your application by sending a results transcript from LADOK to the e-mail address above (same deadline).
Entry requirements: To be admitted to the course, students must have 90 credits within their major, a 15 credit independent research project (such as summer scholarship or bachelor thesis) and be a current student at the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University. Note, if you haven't performed an independent research project previously you should apply for a regular summer scholarship first. If your application for Preparatory Research School is not approved (decision received by email at latest 2022-12-21), your application is automatically transferred to the summer scholarship group (described above).
The course (VMFX75) is comprised of two components. The first component starts on January 23th 2023 and has recurrent meetings in the evenings throughout the spring semester (corresponding to two weeks of full time studies). Most of the sessions are scheduled during evenings (18-20). Different themes will be introduced such as pitch talk, ethics and scientific methods, component consisting of an independent research project (corresponding to ten weeks full time studies). The project will be examined by a written extended abstract submission and a poster presentation on August 22rd.
The course is based on lectures, seminars and active participation of students. The students that are accepted to the course will receive a scholarship during the summer (two months) by the Faculty of Medicine. The student must actively participate in the course during the spring and submit a project plan or the scholarship will be canceled.
